What Does Your Network Look Like to a Hacker?

February 2, 2011

Ever wondered if your firewall is really working? Of course some are tempted to say "who would want my data?" or perhaps, "why would anyone want to hack our network?" Well, consider this: According to Computerworld Magazine, May 6th, 2009, a hacker broke into a medical facilities network in Virginia and stole their data strictly to hold it hostage and demand a 10 million dollar ransom for it. The hacker did not want the data; they wanted the value of the data from the one it was stolen!

Given the plethora of documentation about the predictability of our passwords, a hacker compromising a network, changing a password or two on the server or databases, and asking for a contribution to the college fund seems quite doable. So, the short answer to the question of "who wants my data" is answered simply: you do. If a hacker can get to your data, it is not your data anymore.

This is where we can help.  Staring at $150, we have the ability to perform a scan of your network from the outside using sophisticated software to look for all possible vulnerabilities that your network may have. Then, we issue you a detailed report of any weaknesses with instructions on how to cure the vulnerabilities that we find. Should you want to go more in-depth, we have an entire security assessment program to look at your data from all perspectives. However, it is a good start to at least see yourself as the hacker sees you. After all, even if no one else wants your data, you certainly do.  Feel free to call me with any data security or compliance questions you may have. Let us help you keep up with the rapidly changing world of data security.
